The N2AL network seeks to develop joint research projects relating to algebra teaching and learning from a Nordic perspective, and to provide a long-term supportive research community for researchers who have small and local research groups. The aims of the network are

  • to create and maintain contact between researchers on algebra teaching and learning in the Nordic countries.
  • to identify and explore precise and researchable questions related to the teaching and learning of algebra and related areas of mathematics,
  • to develop clear research agendas and projects to address these questions,
  • to secure funding to pursue those agendas and projects, and
  • to create and maintain contact between researchers on algebra teaching and learning in the Nordic countries.

In November 2025, N2AL was granted three years of fundings from the Swedish Research Council to develop joint projects. In August 2026, it was decided to include “Teaching” too, in the network’s name.
